Circa 1895 This magnificent mansion
is one of Historic Old Louisville's most stunning examples of Richardsonian
Romanesque architecture. The St James Court Foundation purchased the house
in 1987 and restored it. The mansion is now operated as a house museum
and is open for tours.
Walker House Circa1899 This house is a fine
example of late 19th century architecture. It features a wide front porch,
Ionic columns and dental work beneath the porch and roof cornices. It
is located on the city's first walking court, a place for people, not
carrages.
The Pink Palace Circa 1892 This Chateauesque
building was originally the St. James Club Casino, a private club for
the residents of St James and Belgravia Courts. In 1910 it was purchased
by the Women's Christian Temperance Union who painted the original red
brick a pink color to distance it from its former use.
This Italianate home
was built by a physician who lived here with his family until after the
depression. The storefront (on the right) was added to the home in the
1920's and served as the physician's office.
This Richardsonian
Romanesque house was built for Julia McWilliams Prentice Churchill, one
of the founders of the Louisville Jockey Club, later to become Churchill
Downs.
This is a modified
Queen Anne style home built by John Barrett. It is the first house to
be built in the 1300 block of First Street. Mr. Barrett also built two
additional houses next door in a similar style. These houses are called
the three maidens. This is a fine example
of an Arts & Crafts style bungalow, characterized by a low-pitched
gabled roof and a wide porch. It was built on the site of the old Ouerbacker
Brewery. This house was built
as an Italianate cottage and was about half of its current size. It is
the oldest home on the block and may have been the only home for about
25 years. The kitchen was added prior to 1905 and a bedroom wing on the
west side was added around 1929. No Holiday House Tour
is complete without a visit to the Holiday Gift Shop and a stop for hot
chocolate and cookies.
